Thank you, Piotr. Thank you. Colleagues, this next item is being taken in public session. The cameras are already on. Dear colleagues, as you will all know, it's almost a year since the European Commission presented a package of proposals on the multiannual financial framework for the period 2028 to 2034.
As I mentioned earlier when sharing our presidency priorities for the next six months, progressing work on the MFF is a central and key objective and one which I know we can all agree is fundamental for our Union's future and the prosperity of citizens and communities, businesses and stakeholders across Europe. Over the last year, the Danish and Cyprus presidencies have made significant progress to identify and discuss the horizontal and financial elements in the revised negotiating box and to reach partial mandates on many of the sectoral files. I want to congratulate our colleagues for providing a solid basis for the work ahead and for all around this table who have analyzed, discussed and reached consensus on key issues over the last year. Critical work, however, remains, and that's an understatement. It is evident from reactions at our last meeting and the subsequent discussions amongst leaders at the European Council last month that a wide range of views were expressed on key elements of the budget, notably on its volume, new own resources and the balance between expenditure priorities.
The task for our presidency is therefore clear: addressing these important issues in an effort to reach consensus and make a revision to the negotiating box which brings us closer to a timely agreement. Agreement before the end of this year would allow for the adoption of legislative acts next year, which is necessary to ensure that European Union funding reaches beneficiaries, our citizens, our communities, without interruption in January 2028.
In order to do so, and to progress work on new own resources as requested by the President of the European Council, we will require the evidence and logic to deliver a sound and robust compromise proposal. We will do so in the coming months through regular discussions at the General Affairs Council and more technical level meetings at official and ambassador level. Building on this, in September I will take the opportunity to meet each of you in the margins of the General Affairs Council meetings scheduled in Dublin and Brussels, or indeed elsewhere if possible, to elicit your final views and reactions on compromises that our presidency will propose in advance of the October European Council. We understand that the revenue and expenditure sides of the equation need to be taken forward together, and these engagements will of course be an opportunity to address own resources and wider views on the negotiating box. The task is not for Ireland alone.
