Building a New Regional Security Architecture: The Next Phase of the Abraham Accords

The subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa will come to order. The purpose of this hearing is to examine the future of the Abraham Accords and opportunities to strengthen and expand regional cooperation among existing and prospective partners. I now recognize myself for an opening statement. Good afternoon and welcome to today's hearing on the future of the Abraham Accords. And thank you to my colleagues and our esteemed witnesses for being here today as we examine one of the most transformative diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East.
Nearly six years ago, the Abraham Accords fundamentally changed the trajectory of the Middle East. They demonstrated that peace and cooperation are possible when countries choose shared interests over old divisions. The agreements between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, followed by Morocco and Kazakhstan, opened the door to a new era of diplomatic engagement, economic integration, technological innovation, and security cooperation. President Trump during his first administration was instrumental in making these agreements possible. And while they were an afterthought to President Biden, Mr. Trump and his team have again brought them to the forefront of US policy in the Middle East.
We will continue to play a central role in advancing similar agreements and ensuring the long-term success of those already in place. The Middle East looks very different today than it did in 2020, prior to the Abraham Accords. The region has faced unprecedented challenges, from Iran's aggression and the threat posed by its terrorist proxies to the rapid evolution of emerging technologies, economic competition, and shifting geopolitical dynamics. At the same time, these challenges have reinforced an important lesson. America's partners are stronger and our interests are better protected when the region works together.
The Abraham Accords should not be viewed as a finished product. They are a foundation upon which we can build a stronger regional security architecture, expand economic opportunity, encourage innovation, and create new pathways for peace, which is why today's hearing is so important. We are not simply looking back at what the Accords have accomplished. We are looking ahead. How we can deepen security cooperation, how we can accelerate trade and investment, how we can expand cooperation on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, energy, infrastructure, and emerging technologies.
