The subcommittee will come to order. Without objection, the chair is authorized to declare a recess at any time. We welcome everyone to today's hearing on sanctuary policies and their tragic consequences, and I'll now recognize myself for an opening statement. Today's hearing further exposes the ongoing tragedies visited upon innocent American families because of the Democrats' sanctuary laws. These laws require local law enforcement to release dangerous illegal aliens, people who are already in their custody for committing other crimes, back into our communities to commit still more crimes, rather than safely turning them over to ICE to be removed from our country.
ICE officers then have to track them down in order to enforce court-ordered deportations, endangering not only federal law enforcement, but the targets of these removal orders, innocent bystanders, and misguided members of the public who attempt to interfere. Sanctuary laws are also a magnet for illegal aliens since the aliens know that there will be no immigration consequences when they are ever encountered by law enforcement. At a previous hearing on this subject, the Democrats complained in front of an audience filled with Angel Families that these hearings were a waste of their time. Each of these families had lost a loved one to criminals that sanctuary jurisdictions had in custody, could have turned over to ICE, and yet inexplicably released. One sanctuary sheriff from Fairfax County told us that despite an 83 million dollar annual budget, she just didn't have the resources to pick up the phone to tell ICE they were about to release a criminal who had no right to be in this country in the first place.
That criminal, with a long history of crimes and releases, then murdered Stephanie Minter. The Democrats won't spend a dime, not a thin dime, to make a phone call to ICE to protect their communities, and then they loudly complain they don't have the time to hear the consequences. Well, I can assure the Democrats that we will keep holding these hearings until these sanctuary policies are repealed and Americans can be safe once again from the hundreds of thousands of criminal illegal aliens the Democrats allowed into our country and now protect from deportation. Let us be clear: this isn't about obstructing general immigration enforcement. Democrats tried to do that by shutting down the entire Department of Homeland Security.
This is specifically about deporting illegal aliens who have been arrested for other crimes, and yet the Democrats prefer that they be released into your neighborhood rather than being deported to their own country.
