ECRS Mk1 Radar, Set to Cement Eurofighter’s Air Superiority, Hits the Field

The next‑generation ECRS Mk1 (Eurofighter Common Radar System Mark 1) radar, developed for Germany and Spain’s Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft, has moved beyond laboratory tests and has begun being trialled against real targets in live operational scenarios for the first time. Having successfully completed ground tests and cleared a major milestone on the calendar, the system has now paved the way for flight tests planned for 2026. This avionics modernisation drive – which will shape the future operational capability of European air power – looks set to shift the balance in the skies. Consortium partners HENSOLDT and Indra have synchronised all hardware components and the latest software version of the ECRS Mk1 under final operational conditions. In this critical phase, where real combat environments are simulated, the system is being optimised by drawing data from both live targets and cooperative live sources. This maximises the stability and maturity of the software architecture under operational conditions. The decision taken by Germany and Spain in 2024 to develop and procure the ECRS Mk1 sub‑systems has been validated by the first field results. Initial data from the tests directly prove the situational awareness, jamming resistance and high data‑processing performance that the radar’s hardware and software architecture provide to pilots. Under the programme launched with a contract signed in 2020, the industrial partnership of Airbus, Indra and HENSOLDT aims to deliver the system to the two countries’ Eurofighter fleets in 2027. Falko Firl, Head of the Eurofighter Radar Division at HENSOLDT, stated that the process is running to schedule. He noted that this important step toward delivering the ECRS Mk1 to Germany and Spain in 2027 is the result of the uninterrupted commitment of the industrial partners and the strong support of the customers for the programme. Firl also emphasised that this symbolic milestone is a significant reward for the work being done to provide top‑tier air combat capabilities to the nations involved. Mónica Pérez Fernández, Eurofighter Programme Director at Indra, said the start of the testing phase is a critical turning point for the Eurofighter’s future. She added that the AESA radar, with its advanced capabilities, will greatly contribute to the aircraft maintaining air superiority in the years ahead. Fernández also noted that this project is a clear example of how long‑standing collaboration between leading European companies can rapidly deliver cutting‑edge technology solutions to the armed forces. Based on multi‑channel Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology and a high‑performance processor infrastructure, the ECRS Mk1 gives Eurofighter fleets an integrated operational flexibility. The new radar architecture takes situational awareness in advanced air‑to‑air missions to the highest level, while optimising multi‑target tracking and long‑range lock‑on capabilities. The system gives pilots a split‑second decision‑making advantage against dynamic threats on the battlefield. For air‑to‑ground missions, high‑resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mapping capability comes into play. This infrastructure enables precise target detection and identification in all weather conditions and even zero‑visibility scenarios. The integrated electronic warfare architecture – one of the system’s most striking features – forms both a passive and active protective shield for the aircraft. With its ability to conduct electronic attack and defence simultaneously, the ECRS Mk1 exhibits high electromagnetic resilience against enemy radar and jamming systems.
