Hivemind, an artificial intelligence pilot capable of plotting dynamic routes on the battlefield without human intervention, is transforming one‑way attack drones into coordinated swarms. Unlike traditional autopilots, this software can make independent decisions even under electronic warfare conditions. With an operational demonstration planned for this autumn, it will enable a single operator to manage an entire swarm of kamikaze drones. The US Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSW R&E) has selected Shield AI for the next‑generation LUCAS (Low‑Cost Unmanned Combat Assault System) program, which focuses on low‑cost one‑way attack drones. Hivemind, the AI autonomy software developed by the company, will serve as the core command and control system for these unmanned combat systems. The move is aimed at directly enhancing autonomous operational capability under the “affordable mass” concept that is gaining traction in modern warfare doctrine. Fixed Routes are a Thing of the Past While traditional autopilot systems rely on pre‑loaded GPS coordinates and rigid flight paths, Hivemind gives platforms real‑time sensing and freedom of movement. When faced with communication restrictions, heavy electronic warfare pressure, or unexpected tactical obstacles, the software instantly reshapes the mission plan. Under the LUCAS program, Hivemind will act as a common AI pilot that ensures every kamikaze drone within the swarm works in coordination with the others. Human‑in‑the‑Loop Guarantee in the Kill Chain With the AI handling navigation, avoidance manoeuvres, and swarm coordination, the cognitive load on human operators is significantly reduced. Thanks to this autonomous architecture, a single service member can seamlessly command complex swarm operations from one centre — missions that would normally require dozens of personnel. Even though automation shortens the time between detection and engagement — the kill chain — the control mechanism stays within ethical boundaries. While tactical execution and flight management are fully delegated to the AI, final strike decisions and target engagement remain firmly under human‑in‑the‑loop control. The operational demonstration planned for this autumn under the LUCAS program is not Hivemind’s first outing. This AI pilot has already been successfully integrated and tested on Anduril’s YFQ‑44A platform for the US Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, on the US Navy’s BQM‑177 target drone, on the Airbus UH‑72B Lakota helicopter, and on the Destinus Horne platform.
