The DPRK’s Chemical Facilities: Kanggye Area: Site Profile 5

This report on the Kanggye Area is the fifth Project Anthracite site profile exploring different chemical production facilities throughout North Korea. This paper delivers a critical assessment of North Korea's chemical weapons (CW) infrastructure in Kanggye, offering new insights through satellite imagery and open-source intelligence. Its impact lies in providing a clearer, evidence-based foundation for understanding the potential locations of CW-related facilities, addressing longstanding gaps in public knowledge and supporting further research in the defence and security sector. Key findings highlight that, while Kanggye is frequently cited as a hub for CW activity, current evidence from imagery and thermal analysis is inconclusive. The Kanggye Tractor Plant most closely matches reported CW attributes, such as rail connectivity, proximity to munitions production, and underground access, but overall confidence in identifying CW sites remains low.
