Washington, D.C. — Following reports of a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Neera Tanden , president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement: It’s deeply upsetting that an evening intended to honor the First Amendment and members of the White House press corps devolved into another frightening incident of violence. I’m relieved that President Trump, journalists, and the other guests are safe. American democracy depends on both elected officials and journalists being able to safely gather without fear of violence.
