I am thrilled that AEI Senior Fellow Dr. Scott Gottlieb has been  elected  by National Academy of Medicine (NAM) members to serve on the NAM Council, the Academy’s governing and oversight body.  Dr. Gottlieb’s election to the NAM Council is a significant honor. It is a testament to his distinguished contributions to clinical medicine and to his years of leadership.  About NAM, in its words:   Founded in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Medicine is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the United States. The National Academies are private, nonprofit institutions that work outside government to provide objective advice on matters of science, technology, and health.  The National Academy of Medicine spotlights critical issues affecting health; provides evidence-based policy recommendations; facilitates collaboration and action across public and private organizations; guides the development and application of novel science and technologies; rewards innovation and bold ideas; and prepares professionals and leaders for the future.  The National Academy of Medicine champions scientific discovery and innovation, draws on evidence to inform effective policies, and fosters collective action to achieve common goals for health. We publish nonpartisan, research-backed analyses and lead public-private collaborations around critical challenges in health and medicine.  Dr. Gottlieb’s work focuses on advancing public health, accelerating biomedical innovation, improving healthcare delivery, and shaping how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies can be applied to clinical practice. Dr. Gottlieb previously served as the 23rd Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 2017 to 2019. He is widely recognized for modernizing FDA regulatory policy and advancing market-based approaches to improving competition, innovation, and patient access across the healthcare system.  Gottlieb is the author of the  New York Times bestselling book  Uncontrolled Spread: Why COVID-19 Crushed Us and How We Can Defeat the Next Pandemic  (2021) and is currently writing  The Miracle Century: Making Sense of the Cell Therapy Revolution . He is an editorial contributor to the  Journal of the American Medical Association .  My AEI colleagues and I are delighted to see Scott recognized with such a prestigious and important honor and are grateful for his willingness to take on this role.
