Good morning everybody and a big welcome to our guest witnesses today. Thank you all for agreeing to come and speak to us. And it's an important session, this one, because we're focusing very much with you on adult education of maths and numeracy, and all of you have got important roles to play in that. There are four of you, so we want to hear from each of you for each question, but we would just ask that you are concise in your answers, and if you simply agree with somebody else, then that's fine, but also I'm interested in disagreements because I think we get to the heart of these issues better through what I call the crucible of debate. So anyway, I will open the batting with our first question.

And we are aware that over half of adults have got, are challenged in their skills with numeracy. We don't quite have a precise number, but it could be in the order of about 10,000,000 adults in Britain. And so we want to learn more about what provision there is adults if they haven't succeeded in maths at school, what is available and how effective are the mechanisms that are out there. So why don't we start with Doctor Pember.

Good morning everybody, thanks for inviting us. I think all four of us are quite excited because you're asking us to talk on our favourite subject. So what we've got at the moment is much less than we had ten, fifteen years ago. In fact, about half the amount. So in 2007, we had 700,000 adults participating in maths and now we've got 240,000.

So that's the first sort of number to say. The second thing you said, how many people have got poor maths, is probably around sixteen million depending on the way that you count it. But eight of those eight million of those have got very poor maths, you know, less than the skills you'd expect of a nine year old. And those those problems
