Order. Order. Welcome, to this oral evidence session of the education select committee. This is the final oral evidence session in the committee's inquiry on reading for pleasure, after which we will be, reviewing all of the evidence that we've received in preparing our report to the government. And we're really pleased, to welcome, minister, Bailey, and her official, Jenny Olroyd, to give evidence to us, today.

I'd love to. Thank you so much for for having me, and I'm really looking forward to to to reading conclusion of your really important inquiry and what an important topic, it is. Reading really matters, not just to access the curriculum, but because it helps children and young people understand the world around them, understand other people's lives. And I think you've heard over the course of this evidence that it's both a window and a mirror, and I think that's a very powerful phrase that encapsulates the the huge value of, reading. And that's why, as a government, we're very focused on reading, and we'll talk today, I'm sure, about the aspects of it, but the National Year of Reading, our investment in school libraries, the changes that we're making to the curriculum to ensure that it continues to be deeply embedded at the heart of everything we do in our schools.
And if I could also just say, my mom was an English teacher. She was an English teacher for forty years, and so she instilled very early in me a love of reading, huge passion for reading. But I also as I've grown older, as I've had my own children, I also have seen the challenges that we have in encouraging reading for pleasure.
