00:01 - 00:23
Speaker 1
Northern Ireland affairs select committee, we have an evidence session on ending violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland.  Welcome to the minister Jess Phillips and to deputy director of the interpersonal abuse unit, Ditches Ellicott.  Minister, what what is your current assessment of violence against women and girls across The UK and in Northern Ireland?
00:25 - 01:32
Speaker 2
I mean, my current assessment and the government's assessment of violence against women and girls is that it is a national emergency.  I'd say really specifically in relation to Northern Ireland, what the data shows us is the rates of femicide, so the the murder of and domestic homicide is higher there than at not just other parts of The United Kingdom, but quite a lot of the world.  So it's a it's a national emergency.  I could give you the the the the data around we it's about 10% of the population 60 16 who reported suffering one of the many forms of violence against women and girls, so five million people, which is a phenomenal amount.  But our assessment is that it is a national emergency and an epidemic.
01:32 - 01:36
Speaker 1
Ron, and the thing is, given so many levers, it devolved.
01:36 - 01:38
Speaker 2
Yeah.  A lot of this is devolved.
