Order, order. We are now starting this session of the International Development Select Committee, and it's on The UK's partnership and development relationships with Nigeria. Chris, we're very glad that you're joining us remotely. I wonder if you can let us know your job title and your involvement with Nigeria.
00:29 - 01:22
Speaker 2
Thank you very much, and good afternoon, everybody. So, Chris Shojitomi, I'm the managing director and head of Africa at British International Investment, which is obviously The UK's development finance institution. And within my area of responsibility, the African Continent, Nigeria is one of our key priority countries, where BII has been investing for the last seventy five years, and we have quite an extensive portfolio of investments in Nigeria totaling just over $590,000,000, employing over 54,000 people across Nigeria where we've been able to support about $90,000,000 of taxes being paid by the 116 different businesses that we are invested in.
01:23 - 01:36
Speaker 1
That sounds great. I know that BII has just launched its new five year strategy. So does that change in any way your investment strategy for Nigeria? And could you outline what your strategy is, please?
01:39 - 02:20
Speaker 2
Thank you. So Nigeria remains a priority con country for us within the African Continent. It's obviously a country with over 230,000,000 people. It's a country that, the BII has been a long term partner and therefore we believe a lot of our capital is has been helping Nigeria, with a lot of barriers for businesses, but also unlocking impact at scale. With our new strategy, where there's a big continued focus on driving inclusivity as well as sustainable development in Nigeria, again, very much aligning ourselves with the Nigerian government development priorities.
