Council of the European Union Conseil européen

00:24 - 00:46
Intervenant 1
Okay.  Welcome to this press conference.  Following today's Compet Council, with me I have the Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Morten Buelskow, and Executive Vice President Stephanie Sichone, who are both ready to take your questions.  But first, we will have their statements.  So, Minister, please go ahead.

Thank you so much.  This was the last formal competition meeting under the Danish presidency.  We had a number of good issues to discuss.  Of course, we are ending the Presidents of the Sea soon, but I guess it's fair to say that the fight against red tape is not.  We must, in the European Union, keep up the momentum.

That's why we have focused on exactly that today: how we can continue the work with the necessary reductions of burdens, and also how we can not only have fewer burdens and reduce them, but also use the single market.  In that case, we have, as you may know, presented today to the council an action plan, which is actually based on experience that we have in Denmark when it comes to having a digital solution used as the core of communications between businesses and companies, but also between businesses and authorities.  The action plan that we have presented can save up to and hold your blocks 80 at least €87,000,000,000 per year for European businesses.  That's an enormous amount of money and enormous potential if we use digitalization and digital tools as the driving force in reforming the internal markets.  No doubt that when we discuss and speak to companies today, they're using an enormous amount of time on virtually nothing.

If we can use more digital solutions in the future, we have the potential for enormous reductions of burdens and implementing tools that can save companies, as I said, up to €87,000,000,000 per year for European companies.  We also had discussions on e-commerce today.  There's no doubt that consumers cannot be sure when they are moving on the Internet and want to buy things, for example, on Temo's platform.  We had a discussion on how we can strengthen consumer protection and secure fair competition there.  It's not only a matter of fair competition; it is also a matter of protecting small businesses in our countries that see, for example, Tmue and the enormous amount of packages that come into the European Union every year as a threat to their existence.
