Intervenant 1
Okay. Colleagues, please take your seats. We continue our meeting, and we welcome to this joint meeting of the foreigner first and the development committee, the chair, David McAllister. Welcome, David. I'm happy to co chair with you today replacing Marie Andrews.
At this point, the purpose of today's meeting is to turn our focus on the ongoing crisis in Sudan, which, regrettably, of course, has slipped from the global headlines despite its devastating impact on the civilian population and the wider region. The war, which began two years ago, exactly two years ago, has contributed to one of the gravest humanitarian emergencies of the twenty first century. It has destroyed civilian life lives, displays over 12, 000, 000 people and plugged nearly 25, 000, 000 into acute food insecurity. Famine has already been, confirming parts of the country. The EU must take a clear and principled stance against impunity, violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including mass gender based violence and atnisely target atrocities, must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible had to account.
At our previous joint Affet Deva meeting, whereas we remember, discussed the situation in South Sudan. The regional speedover of this conflict could not be more apparent. Only a comprehensive political solution can bring an end to this cycle of violence and in this displacement. We look forward to hearing more about the EU's role in addressing the crisis in Sudan, its efforts to promote peace, and to meet the vast human humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people. Before we hear from our distinguished invited speakers, I would like to hand over to David McAllister, the chair of AFED, for his introductory remarks.
David, the floor is yours
