Good afternoon.  It is truly a great pleasure to welcome chancellor Friedrich Merz to the European Parliament.  His former political home will come im Hause Der Demokratie, will come in zu Hause, liebe Friedrich.  Your experience as a member of the European Parliament, gives you deep understanding of our unions where workings, and we very much welcome that and know that you will be a strong voice for Germany on the European stage.  We have spoken many times over the years about the direction of our union and how we can make it work best for our people, in Germany and across Europe.

Today, we agreed on the need, as always, to boost European competitiveness, cutting red tape.  Here, are aligned driving the simplification agenda.  Europe is open, for business, and we must make sure our companies have the space to, start up and scale up.  The parliament already voted in a fast track procedure to cut various reporting obligations just a few weeks ago, and you can really count, dear Friedrich, on the European parliaments and my personal commitment to what matters to people and bureaucratisierung.  We also discuss, of course, the broader geopolitical agenda, and here too, we agree.

We remain committed to free and fair trade with partners around the world, including our Transatlantic friends.  On Ukraine, our support must continue.  It must be strong.  It must be sustained and strategic to achieve real and lasting peace.  On migration, no single country can and should address this challenge alone.

The solution must be a European one.  We need a comprehensive and cohesive approach that upholds our values and responsibilities while also being tough towards those who have no right to enter and stay.  The next steps, in fact, are on finding a better way forward on return.  So, dear chancellor Mertz, dear Friedrich, your visit to Brussels is not just a homecoming.  It is a reaffirmation of Germany's commitment to the European project, and I'm confident that together, will work to ensure that Europe remains strong, sovereign, and steadfast.
