House of Commons
00:24 - 01:18
Speaker 35
Before we begin, I'd like to pay tribute to Sir George Howarth, who died last week. Sir George was the Member of Parliament for Knowsley from 1986 to 2024. He held numerous posts on select committees in this House, was appointed a minister in the late 1990s, and was a later distinguished and long-serving member of the Panel of Chairs. I've got to say, George I knew, his father-in-law was the MP for Chorley. And George had this commitment to come in, and we all had to go and work on his by-election.
And tragically, George got a bad back, but we did have a big majority at the end of it. But of course, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Julie and wider family and friends. He was a great politician, and it is another sad loss to this House. Order, order, we start with questions, Secretary of State for Defence, Alex Burghart-Carter.

Speaker 1
Thank you, Mr. Speaker, question number one, please.
01:20 - 02:05
Speaker 2
Mr. Speaker, can I associate myself, and I'm sure all members of this House, with your words of condolence for the late great George Howarth. He was a hugely experienced parliamentarian, and I know that he will be very much missed. Mr. Speaker, can I also congratulate the England men's team on what was one of the great nights, or perhaps mornings, in our nation's footballing history, a victory built on pride, passion, and determination. With your permission, Mr. Speaker, I'd like to answer questions one, nine, and thirteen together. Russia poses a serious and persistent threat to UK and European security in every domain: underwater, on the water, on the land, in the sky, space, and cyber.
