Domestic Abuse Act 2021 Committee House of Lords

00:03 - 01:43
Speaker 1
Way of this legislation was a recognition that domestic abuse affects children in the family too, either because of their presence, because of the atmosphere created in the household, the fear that's created, and the the observation they have of what has happened to the parent who's being abused.  And so it's really important that this development took place, but the question is whether we have seen progress in protecting children in providing for their care and well-being in the aftermath of the discovery of abuse.  Now, let me welcome Barbara Mills, King's Council.  She is the head of set of chambers for p b.  She specializes in highly complex children's cases, many involving allegations of serious abuse and safeguarding risk.

Her practice frequently addresses domestic domestic abuse within private and public law proceedings, and she is regarded for her work in family, children, and family matrimonial non court dispute resolution by chambers and partners who publish a a great publication on who has expertise in particular areas, and she is definitely recognized as one of the great experts in the courts on this field.  And her research has found that domestic abuse features in forty percent of private children's cases, underscoring her advocacy for improved system wide and judicial resources in this for this particular problem.  Barbara Mills was also the head of the English bar, the the bar of England and Wales, and I think I've only just completed your period.
