European Affairs Committee House of Lords

00:05 - 02:14
Speaker 4
Hello?  Well, good morning, and welcome to this, public evidence session of the, House of Lords Select Committee for European Affairs where we're looking into the issue of dynamic alignment.  And today, we're focusing on, the sanitary and phytosanitary arrangements which are being negotiated, which, of course, is a very context for the, the principle and the practice of dynamic alignment.  Today, we're delighted to welcome, as our witnesses, Tom Bradshaw, who's president of the National Farmers Union of England and Wales John Powell, who's chief executive of the British Meat Processes Association, and Richard Ballantyne, who's the chief executive of the British Ports Association.  This is a public evidence session.

There will be a transcript produced, and the draft will be sent to each of you to review for any errors and omissions which you wish to correct.  The microphones are live throughout, and, we hope to get the evidence session concluded in sixty minutes.  And with three witnesses and with the questions we've got, it does mean that the questions and the answers, please, should be as succinct as possible so we can cover all the ground.  So I'd be very grateful.  And and please don't all feel obliged to answer, the the same question, if you I bet you I mean, by all means, just say I agree.

But if you have more to add, then, of course, please please do.  Is everyone happy?  Yes.  In which case, I'll get us started, if I may, with the first question.  And it's a it's a general one to kick off.

And it's really to ask you what difference you think that the prospective sanitary in fight to sanitary agreement would make to your members and to your constituency in practical terms compared to the current situation.  I mean, what things would change, what would not, and could you give us, you know, an idea of the of the scale of that change, you know, how how important it would be, how big it would be for each of you?  And perhaps, if we start off, with Richard Bantine first of all, and we move across.
