Speaker 1
Today's session of the business and trade committee as we open our inquiry into the performance of Royal Mail.  David Ward, Martin Walsh, thank you very much indeed for joining us today, to help us set the stage.  We've got a lot to get through over the course of the afternoon before votes, which we expect just before 05:00.  So we will try and ask short questions, and we'd appreciate short punchy answers.  But, Dave Ward, perhaps I could just start with you.

Just help us help set the stage for us.  You're deeply experienced working with Royal Mail.  How bad has the service at Royal Mail now become?

I think the the service at the moment is chaotic.  I think that the people who are responsible for that, you've got to go back a few years, and I'll explain that.  But for workers, it's a demoralizing environment because all they wanna do is come into work, be able to deliver their their deliveries, be able to do what they always used to do, which is deliver for customers.  And now they come into work and they know pretty much that on a daily basis that it's extremely difficult to get through all of the workload.  It's not unusual for them to come in, perhaps after a rest day and see all of the previous day's work there in terms of letters.

So they have doubled the amount of work going out the following day.
