Backbench Business Committee House of Commons

Speaker 1
Order.  Welcome to the meeting of the backbench business committee, which unusually for us is taking place in Committee Room 5 rather than Committee Room 16.  So well done to all our applicants and members of the committee in finding where we are.  We were considering applications for debates in both Westminster Hall and the chamber.  The first application is from Susan Murray on commitment, presumably the house's commitment to the no Nolan principles.

And this is a request for a three hour debate in the chamber.  Susan, please present your case.

Speaker 2
Thank you very much, and and thank you to the committee for for the opportunity to present this for the debate.  We've recently marked thirty years since the Nolan principles were laid out and they were established following a number of scandals in the early nineties and were designed to set high ethical standards clearly to ensure integrity and accountability and objectivity in public life.  And, obviously, the it was intended that the seven principles applied to everyone who served in the public and not just politicians.  And we have seen that throughout public institutions from the police to parliament, these principles are too often being forgotten.  And this is important because each time the public sees that somebody that they're told they should be able to trust violate that trust.

It doesn't just reflect on the wrongdoer, it reflects the on the institution and erodes the general sense of trust that is required to hold society together.  So I believe that it's important for the public to see that we're taking action to create a culture of accountability within politics and within public bodies and to remind ourselves that our colleagues and our colleagues of the principles that we're expected to uphold and and that's why I'm requesting the debate.
