International Relations and Defence Committee House of Lords
00:01 - 01:41
Speaker 3
Coming along. We normally start off by any declaration of of interest. We have lord Derek, who is somewhere other than the parliamentary estate online, and lord Bruce, who's trying to save us all from whatever he's suffering from at the present moment. You're going to be live on parliament television, and I believe there are people out there who watch these things. I I met somebody in Bemore last week who told me that he watched every session.
There's an amazing thing. It's the second evidence session about new inquiry into multilateral institutions. A transcript will be taken of this, and you'll be shown a copy of that. And if you want to make any small changes to that, then you are more than entitled to do that. So I would like to ask a number of questions.
Maybe if you might want to introduce yourself when you answer the first question. So I'll start off with the the basic essential question, which is that The United Kingdom helped to establish the existing level of multilateral institutions. So are they still working? And if they are still working, are they working in The United Kingdom's interest? Do you want to start off, Mark, with that?

Sure. Mark Lyle Grant. I was the British ambassador at the United Nations from 2009 to 2015, and then national security adviser to David Cameron and Theresa May. Look, parts of the system clearly are not working as well as they should, and parts them, I think, still are working. But it's very much in Britain's interests that it should work, not least because we were part of the the team that set up the rules in the first place, and the rules, institutions, norms were set up in our image in consonance with our values.
