Education Committee and Work and Pensions Committee House of Commons

Speaker 1
Welcome this morning to this joint evidence session of the Education Select Committee and the Work and Pensions Select Committee. This is a session in our joint inquiry, being undertaken by both committees together on the government's child poverty strategy, and it is the first oral evidence session that we've held since the publication of the child poverty strategy. I'm Helen Hayes. I'm chair of the Education Select Committee. Halfway through this session, when we move to the second panel, my colleague Debbie Abrahams, chair of the Work and Pensions, Select Committee will take the chair.
We are pleased, to hear this morning, first of all, from the Children's Commissioner, Dame Rachel D'Souza. Dame Rachel, would you like to say anything by way of introduction to the committee this morning?

Speaker 2
So obviously I'm the Children's Commissioner for England, support the promote the the rights of children across the country. I was delighted to be asked by the poverty the poverty unit to bring children's voices to the poverty strategy, which is what I did. So we heard from close-up from a 186 children all around the country with deep qual work and then about 270,000 children by survey. So we really are bringing their voices here. And just to thank Helen, who came we brought those 186 children living in who live in poverty to parliament for an event where they were able to speak, hear from Helen, from Jess, and also Gordon Brown, who beamed in and gave them a little speech.
So they had a fantastic day and were able to be a bit empowered which is great.
