Financial Services Regulation Committee House of Lords

00:05 - 00:55
Speaker 1
Welcome to today's meeting, which is the fifteenth oral evidence session as part of the committee's inquiry into the growth and regulation of stablecoins.  And thank you to the economic secretary to the treasury, miss Rigby, for attending.  The session is open to the public, is broadcast live, and is subsequently accessible via the parliamentary website.  A verbatim verbatim transcript will be taken of the evidence and will be put on the parliamentary website.  Economic secretary, I'd like to congratulate you on surviving to your second appearance in front of this committee.

Most economic secretaries don't manage to make a second appearance.  They disappear after the first, so this is very good news to see you again.  I understand, minister, that you wish to make an opening statement.

Speaker 2
I would, chair, and thank you much.  It's very nice to be before the committee again.  I should say that the the prior directly prior economics actually was indeed promoted.  So she had very good Indeed.  She had very good reason for for for moving on.

Nevertheless, as I said, it's it's good to be here again.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to make a few opening remarks.  I thought I'd say a few words about the government's current view of stablecoins and indeed why they matter to our wider ambition for the financial services sector.  And that ambition, as I know the committee will be well aware, is, of course, for our financial services sector to continue to be the success story that it is to the benefit of our wider economy and indeed to the benefit of the country as a whole.  And pursuant to that ambition and indeed to ensure that we maintain our position as a world leading financial services hub, we have to be able to harness the opportunities presented by digital assets.
