Joined by minister Narayan, who's the minister for AI and online safety at and and miss Roland, who's the director of security and online harms at DSIT.  Thank you very much for joining us.  So I want to ask some questions, and I wondered if I could ask you, minister, could you explain to us what your day job is?

Thank you, chair.  And thank you in particular for both the the inquiry that you're conducting as a group but also for that generous opener.  The the fundamental thing I'd say is that you will know more than any other parts of parliament that we are in a totally new geopolitical paradigm.  I feel that AI is the central question in terms of capability for the future of our national security, economic security, and indeed trust in our communities and on our democracy.  And so the crux of my job is to make sure that we are doing everything in this country to position us to have that capability, build sovereignty as well as prosperity as a result of AI, but to do so in recognition that this is comparable, if not greater still, than big jumps in military capability historically of significance, naval capability, nuclear capability, I think we need to take AI as seriously as those big jumps when we're thinking about the future of our public policy.

And so I'm very focused on capturing the opportunities of AI economically but making sure that we're doing so in a way that protects our trust and safety domestically in terms of AI capability as well.

And there are potential amendments to the Online Safety Act through the crime and policing bill.  Are you dealing with that?
