Childhood Vaccinations Committee House of Lords
00:00 - 01:52
Speaker 1
Welcome to today's meeting. This is the 19th oral evidence session as part of the committee's inquiry into childhood vaccination rates in England. It is actually our last oral evidence session. Thank you to Sharon Hodgson MP, the minister in charge of these issues, for joining us today, and Catherine Francis and Caroline Temmink for attending. The session is open to the public, it's broadcast live, and it will subsequently be available on the parliamentary website.
A verbatim transcript will be taken of the evidence and will be published on the parliamentary website. A few days after the session, you will be sent a copy of the transcript to check for accuracy, and it would be very helpful to us if you could advise us of any changes and send it back as soon as possible. If after this evidence session you want to clarify or amplify any points made during our evidence, or anything that we've asked you for in addition, perhaps you would send it back to us as soon as you can. I'd be most grateful. So the first question, and to remind you to introduce yourselves when you answer it, is pretty obvious really.
Are the government and the NHS doing enough to reverse the decline in childhood vaccination rates and to tackle and reduce inequalities? And how do you measure the success of the government's action to improve childhood vaccination coverage and reduce inequalities, including progress against the 2023 NHS vaccination strategy? And will you commit to reporting on progress against the strategy to Parliament periodically? Minister, would you like to start?

Speaker 2
I will. Good afternoon, everyone. It's a pleasure to come along and give evidence to your committee, and thank you, Baroness Walmsley. I'm Sharon Hodgson, the Minister for Public Health and Prevention. And yes, this is a major issue and it's a major priority for the government.
