Order.  Welcome to the session of the health and social care select committee.  This is the eighth and final session in what has, become a very wide ranging inquiry into food and weight management.  And before we even introduce our witnesses, we want to start this session with a video.  Now these are testimonies from lived experience, people who came to our weight management roundtable in January, and they share their experiences of accessing treatment and living with obesity, which we always want to bear in mind in our work.

And as ever, we are extremely grateful to anyone who shares testimony with us, but particularly our lived experience witnesses who share their stories so publicly today.  So please, can we show the video first?

My name is Nadia Isaac, and I'm a person living with obesity.  And I want to advocate for people living with obesity who are too stigmatized to speak up.  My process is a very long thirty year process.  I have lived with obesity my entire life and I've had to struggle to get any types of access to weight management from the NHS.  Finally I managed to get access to a weight management service and I was offered bariatric surgery which has helped me on my pathway to regain my health.

The treatment itself at UCLH in London was excellent however the one thing I must point out is that the mental health side was sorely lacking because it's not just about the weight, it's about your mental health as well.  And after the surgery, I would have appreciated to have psychological care, and we also need aftercare throughout our life because obesity is a chronic and lifelong disease.  I do wish, looking back, that the GPs and health care professionals that I came across would know more about obesity and be able to educate me as a patient.
