Westminster Hall House of Commons

Speaker 1
Order, order.  I call Adrian Ramsay to move the motion.
00:15 - 01:07
Speaker 2
Thank you very much, Sir Christopher, and it's a pleasure to serve under your chairship.  I beg to move that the House considers preparedness for extreme heat.  And I know this is something that affects all of our constituents, and I'll be happy to take interventions during my speech.  Over recent weeks, Britain has experienced an extraordinary succession of heatwaves that have tested the resilience of our communities and our public services.  We've all talked on our way in today about how we've all been personally affected, we might have been uncomfortable at various points.

But this succession of heatwaves pose serious risks.  We've seen hospitals declaring critical incidents.  Ambulance services have faced record demand, transport has been disrupted, schools closed, and firefighters have battled major wildfires after prolonged hot, dry conditions.

Speaker 3
I will.  I thank the honorable member for giving way.  As he mentions wildfires, at the moment there are 19 live wildfires across England and Wales.  And last year a devastating wildfire in North on the North York Moors raged for 40 days over 10 square miles.  It was caused by a campfire.
