European Commission Commission européenne

Thank you.  Razia Koch, AFP News Agency.  I just wanted to ask, in terms of yesterday's visit by the Chinese minister, during the press conference, if I hadn't, I don't know, misheard, because I was writing at the same time, the Commissioner spoke of tangible results, which is all fine and great, but there's a lot of assumption made in the way that Commissioners sometimes speak.  I'd like to understand, what does tangible results mean?  Is it that the EU would like to see in number terms the reduction of the deficit, which could reach 400 billion in 2026?

Is that what they're looking for?  I'm just trying to understand between now and October what it is, because in terms of dialogue, I understand that, but what is it that you're looking for that will change?  Like, what's the tangible?  Thank you.

Thank you, Razia.  So, there are a few ways I wish to answer your question.  When you say, what are the outcomes we're trying to achieve, first of all, I think it's worth repeating that the simple fact of such an in-depth meeting, the first meeting of the EU-China Trade and Investment Consultation, is in itself an outcome.  The fact of both sides having published a joint press statement might not seem like a huge thing, but in fact it's very significant because it's the first time that has happened between both sides since 2019, I'm told.  And therefore, having a clear, structured platform for dialogue, creating a more targeted structure for dialogue in which we can talk very specifically about areas of common interest, areas of common concern, that's very meaningful.

Next point is that both sides agreed to establish a comprehensive mechanism to monitor trade flows.  Again, this is significant because what we're saying is that we will, in cooperation with China, identify a common understanding of trade patterns, where there may be issues of concern, thus allowing for rapid political engagement to address such concerns.  So, I think taking all those things into account, yesterday's meetings in themselves, in and of themselves, represent really tangible outcomes.  And then looking forward, the Commissioner, Commissioner Šefčovič I'm talking about, mentioned that they've set a deadline of October to make some meaningful progress on these issues.  He has received an invitation from Minister Wang to go to China as the next political milestone.
