Thank you.  Thank you so much.  I didn't know that it will be such a long elaboration of my CV.  So, dear guests, dear honorable members, dear Pina, Vice-President of European Parliament, dear young leaders, this is the most important.  So it is true pleasure for me to address you today here in Cairo.

I want to share some thoughts with you on subjects that lies at the heart of my portfolio and the subject you know best: the role of young people in shaping the Mediterranean's future.  You may not know that it is not in my title that within my portfolio I'm also responsible for demography.  Why is this important to mention at the beginning?  Because demographics show us that Mediterranean region is very young, as all of you know.  Egypt, for example, has a significant youth population with over 60% of people under the age of 30.

This is not simply a statistic.  It is an extraordinary opportunity, as all of us know.  It means that the future of our region will be shaped by your energy, by your creativity, and by your ambition.  Yesterday I spoke at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean about the importance of engaging young people and creating concrete opportunities for your future.  You deserve to be empowered so that you can act for the benefit of your communities.

You can be the bridge of our shared sea, Mediterranean.  Because the Mediterranean is also a part of Europe itself.  It is a part of history, it is a part of culture.  This principle is at the heart of the Pact for the Mediterranean.  It is at the heart of our partnerships.
