So good afternoon. Welcome to this press point on the third edition, the third edition of our EU demography report. So it's our pleasure to have with us today Dubravka Šuica, Commissioner for the Mediterranean, but also responsible for demography. So she will present to you the report and then we will take a few questions. Commissioner.

Thank you so much. So demography report is here. The third one. This morning I had the pleasure of launching the third demography report. We gathered with Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto, with the European ministers, with members of European Parliament, as well as with academics and society organization, civil society organizations, many other stakeholders.

You know that tackling demography requires a whole-of-society approach. So our discussion confirmed that Europe's demographic transformation is no longer a challenge of tomorrow, it is happening now. Our population is reaching its peak. Today the European Union has just over 450 million people. By the end of this century it will fall below 400 million.

This is the projection. At the same time, Europeans are living longer, as you know, longer but also healthier lives. Life expectancy has reached 81.5 years and by 2050 one in every three Europeans will be over the age of 65. So this is one of the greatest achievements, but it also raises fundamental questions. How do we sustain our workforce?
