European Commission Commission européenne

00:00 - 00:46
Intervenant 4
Hi, I'm Joachim Gammenthaler from Estonian Public Broadcasting.  I have a question on the 21st sanctions package and in particular on the plans to stop the entry of ex-Russian combatants into the EU.  When the President of the Commission was speaking in early June, I kind of took this as a promise that the Commission is going to stop these people from who have fought against Ukraine and in doing so against wider Europe gaining access to the EU.  Now it seems the member states might not be on board.  Are you confident that you will be able to get support to get this proposal through?

And I have a follow-up, but I'll come back to that.

Thank you.  I'll ask Shivan to join us, but in general on your question, are we confident that the proposal will get through?  Well, we when we put forward proposals, we are confident that there will be support and it comes not out of the blue.  Our proposals are also preceded by sounding out.  Now, on your particular specific question, Shivan.

Good afternoon.  You know our general comment is that we don't comment on the proposals in the sanctions packages until they're adopted.  We did of course, the President gave a quite strong and detailed statement when we adopted this most recent package.  And you know, it does include this proposal to ban Russian combatants from entering the EU.  And that element, as with all the other elements in the package, are, you know, part of the discussions that are taking place in the Council where the package will have to be adopted by unanimity, as is the case with all of our sanctions packages.
