European Commission Commission européenne

Thanks, Paula.  Hi, Thomas.  There was a letter in today's Financial Times from 60 academics, including the likes of Shoshana Zuboff and Mariana Mazzucato, so big names.  And they were calling on Ireland to recuse itself from discussions on digital files and corporate tax during the upcoming six months of the Irish presidency because of perceived conflicts of interest there.  My questions: let's say Ireland doesn't recuse itself from those files during the next six months.

So what safeguards are there that the Commission might be able to introduce over this period to safeguard EU digital rights during discussions?  I think they're trilogues over the digital omnibus, and there are also going to be discussions about corporate tax.  And second question: how do you respond to those who would say that there's a link between the pace at which omnibus legislation has been put forward and the fact that it is Ireland that has the presidency of the Council for the next six months?  There are those who would say, okay, that window of opportunity is being, if you like, exploited.  Thanks.

Thank you, James.  Allow me to take it from a more general point of view and to express very clearly that we have full confidence and trust in the ability of the Irish presidency to carry out its role as presidency in full independence and in defending the EU interest.  So we have no doubts about that.  Anything else to add more specifically, Thomas?

Yes, maybe specifically on digital, Paula.  On the legislation that we have already passed, James, I mean the DSA, the DMA, the AI Act, I think there are already a number of lessons learned that we have, especially from the DSA, where the enforcement structure of the DSA has worked extremely well, especially with Ireland and Dublin of course playing a key role when it comes to the enforcement of the digital legislation because of course, as you know, James, a lot are established there in Dublin.  So that works very well, so a lot of lessons learned to take from that.  When it comes to important legislation that we have put forward, be it the MSS, mobile satellite services, be it the omnibuses indeed, the Cybersecurity Act, these are fundamental proposals and very important proposals for Europe and of course the tech sovereignty package, let's not forget the tech sovereignty package.  This is definitely a proposal and these are proposals we have made in the interest of the European Union to be globally competitive in these key digital sectors and areas.
