European Commission Commission européenne

First, we need to clarify something that is persistently making the rounds: the European Commission does not fund the International Olympic Committee in any way.  They do not have access to any of our funding.  This is very important.  We have seen the letter as well that you refer to, and again, very important to make the point that we do not fund the International Olympic Committee.  The European Olympic Committee is a separate organization, and the various other sporting associations are separate entities as well.

Now, given the huge amount of various sporting associations and other organizations, I do not have a full overview of the various ways they have access to our programs that they can access funding from the European Commission.  This is something that we will absolutely look into, also in the light of the letter.  There we will have a better idea of the overall number that sporting associations in Europe generally have access to funding to, but I do not have it now.  But I really, it is very, very important to make the point that the European Commission does not fund the International Olympic Committee.  And we have made our position very, very clear following their board's decision to allow Russian athletes to compete for a spot in the '28 Summer Olympics.

We do not agree with that decision, and this is fully in line with the conclusions that the European Union heads of state came to in the June European Council.
