European Commission Commission européenne

Thank you so much.  It's not entirely clear to me who is in charge of this, but the Lower Saxonian environment ministry today approved the production of Russian nuclear fuel rods in co-production between Rosatom and the French nuclear power company.  In this context, I want to ask whether this is A, in line with the so-called REPowerEU roadmap, which sought to sort of disentangle the European nuclear sector from its dependence on Russia.  And secondly, when the Commission will propose, as per the roadmap, its tariffs on Russian enriched uranium.  Thank you so much.

Thank you very much for your question.  Anna-Kaisa is here to answer.

Okay, first, it's correct that it's a little bit between me and Siobhan as regards the approval of the plant.  As regards REPower and more broadly, Rosatom is not on the sanctions list, so that's one thing.  The second thing is about us phasing out Russian nuclear fuels and nuclear products from the EU market, which is in the EU REPowerEU roadmap, as you mentioned.  We are working on it and we are committed to making such a proposal.  It is, as regards nuclear fuels, it is a complex, slightly more complicated exercise to do this and to prepare this proposal, which is why we are taking our time to do this, but we are absolutely committed to that.

You are aware of the situation on the dependencies of Russian nuclear fuel in some of our Member States.  In many of them, work is ongoing to find alternative suppliers, but in the case of nuclear fuels particularly, it is a slightly more complex exercise, which is why we are yet to make this proposal, but we will be adopting a proposal in due course also as regards Russian nuclear fuels.
