Good afternoon and welcome to our midday briefing today, Thursday, the 23rd of July 2026.  Before we begin our announcements, I would like to remind you that we will hold a technical briefing off the record on the 21st sanctions package here in our press room at 1:00 PM, so right after our midday.  We will finish our midday no later than 12:55 to allow our experts to get set up for the technical briefing.  Next, I would like to call Thomas up to the podium for an announcement relating to the DMA, our Digital Markets Act.  Thomas.

Google has just been fined 890 million euro for two breaches of the Digital Markets Act.  First, a fine of 460 million euro in the self-preferencing case.  90% of online searches in the EU are carried out through Google Search.  This shows the importance of Google as a gateway between end users and businesses.  On top of that, Google is displaying its own services, think of Google Shopping, Hotels, and Transport, more prominently.

A very concrete example: if you're looking for a flight and you look for that on Google Search, the first offer you will get is Google Search.  This does not allow alternatives to compete fairly.  Second, a fine of 430 million euro in the anti-steering case.  Google does indeed not allow app developers to steer consumers to cheaper alternatives outside of Google Play.  In the EU, businesses have the right to compete fairly.

Gatekeepers have the obligation to ensure a level playing field and consumers the right to choose for cheaper alternatives offers.  Google has now 60 days to comply with the Digital Markets Act.
