Your Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.  Welcome back to day two of the Riga Conference 2026.  Yesterday gave us plenty to think about.  Today we widen the lens even further.  From Europe's competitiveness and the future of Russia to changing global power, populism, and finally, the question whether sport can truly be separated from politics.

Europe is trying to do several things, difficult things, at once.  Strengthen its economy, build technological capacity, invest much more in defense, and maintain political and fiscal stability while doing so.  Two years after the Draghi report, our first panel brings together economic, diplomatic, financial, and technology perspectives to ask whether Europe is moving quickly enough.  Moderating this conversation is Rebecca Christie, Senior Fellow at Bruegel.  Rebecca, the stage is yours.

Thanks so much, I'll take the middle as the moderator so I can see everyone and I'll let my amazing panel come up.  Do not have a preference for what order, just make yourselves comfortable.  We have a fantastic panel today.  We have of course Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, who you know, Peter Sarlin from NestAI and Qutwo, we have Andrew Puzder, the ambassador to the US to the EU from the US mission in Brussels, you can find your way up, and Garance Pineau from ODDO BHF.  We are going to be talking less about security and defense and more about the overall economy today in this panel.

We have the assignment of assessing European strategic autonomy and competitiveness two years after the Draghi report, which as you know, was one of the big reports that came out on integration of the single market and showed that to be more competitive and more successful Europe faced an investment gap of around 800 billion a year, which is a lot of money and requires a lot of initiative from the public and from the private sector and then with a thriving economy and a thriving private sector, there is then the basis for investment in other things, including defense and security, but not only defense and security.  Today is a special day also, as you maybe can hear from my accent I was born and raised in the United States before moving to Europe 15 years ago and 25 years ago on September 11th, 2001 the whole world changed.  So perhaps Andrew you can say something about just what that means.
