I have a question regarding the upcoming elections in Serbia, where the President of the Assembly and acting President Ana Brnabić protested over the composition of the EU observation delegation, saying it is biased. How do you comment on that coming from a country that is EU member-to-be, and how important test will the upcoming elections on Sunday be for Brussels about the Serbian European path? Thank you.

Yeah, first let me say that the EU is closely following, of course, the upcoming elections in Serbia on 25 October. Free, fair, and transparent elections are at the core of European democracy. They must be organized in line with European and international standards. Specifically on the election observation missions, let me be clear that we take any attempts to discredit members of the European Parliament in the election observers very seriously. Election observation missions deployed by well-established international organizations, including by members of the European Parliament, are playing an important role to ensure the democratic process and accountability are respected.
Their work is based on clear standards, impartiality, and long-standing expertise. So we expect all countries, including of course candidate countries and potential candidates, to engage constructively and transparently with recognized international election observation efforts. The deployment of the long-term OSCE ODIHR election observation mission at the request of the Serbian authorities, by the way, as well as the invitation of the European Parliament, are important steps towards ensuring credible election observation and supporting the contribution of domestic observers to the integrity of the electoral process.
