European Commission Commission européenne

00:00 - 01:37
Intervenant 1
Hello.  Matthew Newman from MLex.  Just a question for Thomas.  Just to follow up on some of the big news this week in the United States regarding Meta.  And this is a rather large court ruling against Meta that was about 25 billion dollars following up another ruling in August that was 18 billion.

So in the last couple years we've had a steady stream of complaints by US administration officials about the DSA and to some degree the DMA.  But essentially the complaint is that these European legislation, the rules, are unfairly targeting EU companies.  And my question today is how the Commission would respond to these accusations in light of these massive rulings against Meta in the tens of billions, far exceeding any DSA decisions to date or even DMA decisions that are in the millions.  Can the US administration say that the European legislation is actually targeting or unfairly targeting US companies when US states are levying such large fines?  Thanks.

Thanks, Matthew.  Let's start maybe with the obvious that we have said many times from this podium: we have the sovereign right to legislate.  And this of course applies to the digital sector.  And we always do this in a proportional way.  We do not enforce and regulate by flag, we enforce and regulate by problem.

That's a big, big difference.  So the DSA, the DMA, the AI Act, they apply to the US companies, they apply to Asian companies, Chinese companies, they apply of course to European companies.  One of the prime examples was this week with booking.com.  Now, that being said, when we enforce our legislation, we start with the problem.  And we always said that, speaking of the DSA and Meta for example, because you're referring to this company, that this is a shared concern.
