Work and Pensions Committee and Education Committee House of Commons

Speaker 1
And a very warm welcome to the second oral evidence session for delivering the child poverty strategy, a joint inquiry between the work and pensions select committee and also the education select committee.  And we're delighted to welcome our first panel.  We have doctor Matt Barnes from the University of London.  We have Baroness Ruth Lister from who is one of our colleagues here, but also an emeritus professor from Loughborough University.  And then we have Ed Ed Macpherson from WPI Economics and Ruth Patrick, professor Ruth Patrick from the University of Glasgow.

I need to declare some interest, and I know there are other members that do as well.  So apart from knowing my esteemed colleague from the House of Lords, Ruth Lister, I am also an acquaintance of professor Ruth Patrick as as as well.  And I also need to say in panel two, Alan Francis is a former colleague from from Auldham as as as well.  Does anybody else want to declare an interest?

Thank you.  So, again, a warm welcome.  I am going to start the questions if that's okay.  So obviously the government's strategy for child poverty when it was published last year was very ambitious in terms of what it set out about reducing child poverty and their own mod models estimate that 500,000 children will be lifted out of poverty.  But at the same time, by 2030, the government estimates that only 30% of children there will still be 30% of children living in poverty.
