Welsh Affairs Committee House of Commons

00:04 - 01:37
Speaker 2
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this oral evidence session of the Welsh Affairs Select Committee.  My name's Ruth Jones and I'm chair of that committee.  And today it is a very, very warm day.  Apologies for the lack of air conditioning.  This is a very old building.

But if you, if you would like to remove jackets, please feel free to do so.  There is water in front of you and if you need more, please do indicate the staff around will come and supply you with more.  And if you need a break at all, then please do indicate and we will stop for a small break.  Thank you very much.  So today we are considering the future of policing in Wales and we are hearing from the police and crime commissioners of Wales's four police forces.

And I'm so pleased all four of you are able to be here in person today.  It really does help matters having you in front of us face to face.  Thank you for that.  This session is intended to scrutinize the UK government's proposals for reforming policies across England and Wales.  And these were outlined in a white paper published in January this year.

And it's expected that these proposals will form the basis of legislation that is to be introduced sometime in the autumn, depending on personnel.  The white paper itself features a broad range of proposals and we're here today to understand what they might mean for Wales.  And we're particularly keen to know what comes next for the police accountability in Wales, given that the proposals include a plan to abolish the roles that you currently hold at the end of the term in 2028.  So with that in mind, I would like to thank you all for taking time to appear before us today.  Can I ask any members to declare any interest they may have before this session?
