Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee (part 1 of 2)

25 September 2025

Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee Australian Parliament

01:35:08 - 01:37:02
Speaker 8
Well, good morning.  I declare open this hearing of the Senate Foreign Affairs Defense and Trade References Committee inquiry into the issues relating to advocacy services for veterans accessing compensation and income support.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet and pay my respects to their elders past and present.  The committee will be conducting today's hearing in person and via teleconference.  I am senator Henderson, chair of the committee, and I'm joined by senator Gauche, senator Collins, senator McLaughlin remotely by video conference, and senator Lamby.

These are public proceedings being video streamed live via the parliament's website, and a hand sanred transcript is being made.  I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege.  It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt.  It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera.

I'll remind committee members and witnesses who are appearing via video conference and who are not speaking to mute their microphones.  I would now like to welcome representatives from the National Association for Veteran Advocacy, Life After Defense, and Australian veteran health services.  I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to senate committees has been provided to you.  For the Hansard record, could you please state your full names and the capacity in which you appear today?
