Colleagues and friends, welcome. Good afternoon. I'm delighted, to welcome you to the twenty twenty five senate lecture series. My name is Toni Matulik. I'm the clerk assistant procedure here in the senate department.
We're meeting today at Parliament House On Land where people have been meeting for thousands of years. I'd like to acknowledge the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples who the traditional... Who are the traditional custodians of the Canberra area, and I pay my respects to the elders past, present, and emerging of all of Australia's indigenous peoples. Today's lecture is being live streamed on the Australian Parliament House website and on YouTube. It's also being Auslan interpreted.
Today's lecture will be followed by a short Q and A session. So please do feel welcome to ask questions at the conclusion of today's lecture. It's my pleasure to introduce today's presenter, Doctor. Jacinta Darmananda. Doctor Darmananda is a senior lecturer at the Law School of the University of Western Australia.
She's a nationally recognized scholar on legislation and its interpretation. She's the coauthor of Modern Statutory Framework Principles and Practice and she's the legal adviser to the ACT Legislative Assembly Standing Committee on Legal Affairs in its legislative scrutiny role. Prior to joining the University of Western Australia, Chikinta worked for over a decade as a lawyer in Australia and overseas, including in Singapore, Tokyo, New York, Melbourne and Perth.
