Joint Standing Committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme Australian Parliament
15:06 - 15:59
Speaker 8
Hearing, I declare open the hearing of the Joint Standing Committee of the National Disability Insurance Scheme for the committee's inquiry into its first annual report of the forty eighth parliament. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, the Ngunnawal and Nambri people, and pay my respects to their elders past, present, and emerging. And I extend that respect to aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are here today or online. We'll be conducting today's hearing in person and via video conference. And I have deputy chair senator Kovacic, miss Berry, and senator Steele John joining us via video conference as well as committee member senator Mulholland, with me here in person.
15:59 - 16:38
Speaker 11
These are public broad proceedings being video streamed live with captions via the parliament's website, and a hand saned transcript is being made. I do remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege. It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence. Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera.
16:38 - 17:59
Speaker 8
If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the grounds upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera. But in my time on this committee, that hasn't happened. So I think we will be fine. And I remind committee members and witnesses who are appearing via video conference and who are not speaking, if you could please mute your microphones.
So... And could I please remind those providing evidence today that you should not divulge confidential personal or identifying information when you speak. If you wish to supplement your evidence with written information, you can please forward it to the secretariat after this hearing. So I do ask everyone to ensure they have switched off or turned their mobile phones to silent, And if witnesses take any questions on notice, the committee would request that information be provided within two weeks by the 11/05/2025. And please liaise with the secretariat if you would need extra time.
