Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy - Melbourne, VIC (part 1 of 2)

10 November 2025

Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy Australian Parliament

22:09 - 24:04
Speaker 29
Open this hearing of the Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet.  And pay my respects to their elders past and present.  I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people here today.  Committee will be conducting today's hearing via video conference and in person.

Committee members attending in person are myself, Senator Bush Wilson as chair Deputy Chair, Senator Nana Raja, Senator Canavan, Senator Darman, and Senator Roberts.  Joining us via teleconference is Senator McLaughlin, who's on the line now.  These are public proceedings being video streamed live by the parliament's website and a hand side transcript is being made.  I remind witnesses that are giving evidence to committee that are protected by parliamentary privilege.  It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt.

It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  Witnesses also have the right to be heard in camera, which means in confidence in private.  If a witness objects for answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed.  If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera.  I remind senators of their obligations under the behavioral code for Australian parliamentarians treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect.

I remind everyone engaging in the public hearing, including witnesses and members of the public, that behavioral standards for the Commonwealth parliamentary workplaces require people to act respectfully, professionally, and with integrity, encourage and value diverse perspectives, and recognize the importance of a free exchange of ideas.  Bullying, harassment, discrimination will not be tolerated or condone.  Also, my committee members and witnesses who are appearing via video conference who are not speaking to please mute their microphones.  I'm nearly finished.  So I now welcome, friend...
