Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy - Sydney, NSW (part 1 of 2)

12 November 2025

Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy Australian Parliament

22:01 - 24:06
Speaker 10
To clear open this hearing of the Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy, I begin by acknowledging the truthful custodians of the land on which we meet, the Gadigal people, the Gadigal and pay my respect to their elders past and present.  I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people here today.  The committee will be conducting today's hearings via teleconference and in person.  Committee members attending in person are myself, Senator Bushwasser as Chair, Senator Canavan, Senator Darmanen and Senator Roberts.  Joining us by teleconference is Senator McLaughlin and the Deputy Chair, Senator Anand Raja, who is not technically Deputy Chair today.

These are public proceedings being video streamed live via the Parliament's website and a handset transcript is being made.  I remind witnesses that and give evidence to the committee that are protected by parliamentary privilege.  It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee and such action may be treated by the Senate as a contempt.  It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  Witnesses also have the right to request to be heard in camera.

If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed.  If the committee determines to insist on an answer, the witness may request that the answer be given in camera.  I remind senators of their obligations under the behavioral code for Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness and respect.  I remind everyone engaging in the public hearing, including witnesses and members of the public that the behavior standards for Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces require people to act respectfully, professionally and with integrity, encourage and value diverse perspectives and recognize the importance of a free exchange of ideas.  Bullying, harassment, discrimination will not be tolerated or condoned.

I also remind committee members and witnesses who are appearing via teleconference and who are not speaking to mute their microphones.  I now welcome representatives of News Corporation in person.  I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to senate committees has been provided to you.  For the hand side record, would you please state your full names and the capacity in which you appear today?
