11 November 2025

Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters Australian Parliament

18:13 - 20:37
Speaker 1
Ladies and gentlemen, I'll just bring up my notes here.  One second.  Okay.  I declare open this public hearing of the joint standing committee on electoral matters for the inquiry into the twenty twenty five election.  In accordance with the committee's resolution of the 08/04/2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the Parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of proceedings will be published on the Parliament website.

I remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need, to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the committee.  I'd like to start by also acknowledging that we're on traditional Aboriginal land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation and pay respects to elders past, present and emerging.  And thank members and senators for joining us here in Melbourne today and thank you, to our community members, for coming today.  This is the first public hearing we're holding and hearing directly from members of the community.  You all play a very important role in our democracy.

We're all very proud of our democracy here on this side of the table, and I'm sure, you are too.  And there's very good reason why we have one of the most stable democracies on earth.  It's because of our high participation and respected political practices.  However, we've received evidence and it's been well reported that there was something a little bit different about 2025.  So that's why we want to come and hear directly, from electoral participants, community members, volunteers, voters,

To get their views and experiences on the public record so that this committee can consider what, if any, reforms we should recommend to the special minister of state and to the government.  So thank you for taking your time on what is a much colder Melbourne than I would have envisaged before I got here.  We'll now proceed to this morning's community session.  Participants in the session have been invited to give a five minute statement to the committee.  I'll invite participants to come to the table one at a time to give their statement.
