Joint Committee on Law Enforcement Australian Parliament
11:15 - 13:13
Speaker 12
There opened this hearing of the parliamentary joint committee on law enforcement into the capabilities of law enforcement to respond to money laundering and financial crime. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land in which we meet and pay my respects to their elders past and present. I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples here today. The committee will be conducting today's hearing via video conference and in person. There are public proceedings being video streamed live via the parliament's website, and a hand side transcript is being made.
I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege. It's unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on the account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the parliament as contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence. Witnesses are also... Have a right to request to be heard in camera.
If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the grounds upon which the objection has been made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed. Committee determines to insist if we, as the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answers be given in camera. I remind parliamentarians of their obligations under the behavior code for Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect. I remind witnesses who are appearing via video conference and who are not speaking to mute their microphones. Before I welcome the Police Federation of Australia, I just want to acknowledge that senator Antig is on the line.
And, mister O'Brien, if you could just identify yourselves.
