27 November 2025

House Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Disability Australian Parliament

10:22 - 11:03
Speaker 30
Open this public hearing of the standing committee on health, aged care, and disabilities inquiry into the Thriving Kids initiative.  I'd like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands in which we meet today and pay my respects to their ancestors and elders past, present, and emerging.  I extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their culture and spiritual connections to Australia's lands and waters.  In accordance with the committee's resolution of the 08/21/2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the inquiry website.  I remind members of the media of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the committee.
11:03 - 11:24
Speaker 11
I remind all public officials and stakeholders who are present before us in ensuring the safety of children during these proceedings.  This includes avoiding the use of names or identifying details when referring to children, ensuring that any discussion involving children is respectful, appropriate, and consistent with our shared responsibility to maintain a safe environment.  I invite members of the committee to introduce themselves.
11:25 - 11:30
Speaker 2
Hello.  I'm doctor Sophie Skomps, member for McKellar on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
11:31 - 12:01
Speaker 30
I'm Mike Ferrelanda, the chair of the committee and member for MacArthur in, Southwest Sydney.  For the record, before giving evidence, would you please state your full names and the capacity in which you appear before the committee?  Although the committee does not require you to give evidence under oath, I should advise you that this hearing is a legal proceeding of the parliament and therefore has the same standing as proceedings of the respective houses.  Giving a false misleading evidence is a serious matter and may be regarded as a contempt of parliament.  The evidence given today will be recorded by Hansard and attracts parliamentary privilege.
