Joint Standing Committee on Public Works Australian Parliament
15:26 - 17:18
Speaker 7
Good afternoon, everyone. It being just after 02:00, I declare open this public hearing of the parliamentary standing committee on public works for the inquiry into Department of Home Affairs, Younger Hill Immigration Detention Center, Hawke Compound Redevelopment Project. The committee's role, defined in the Public Works Committee Act of 1969, is to consider and report on the purposes and need for the proposed works, the most effective use of public money that can be made in carrying out the works, and the present and prospective public value of the proposed works. In accordance with the committee's resolution of the 07/31/2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of proceedings will be published on the parliament's website. I also remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the committee.
I'm Tony Zapier, the chair of the committee. To my left is Andrew Wilcox, the deputy chair, and further to my left, senator Josh DeLager.
And we have on the line miss Tanya Lawrence, the member for Hazluck. If any committee members are participating via Chorus Call, that is Tanya, I'll remind her or any other member that might join us, that is participating via Chorus Call, to mute their microphones when not speaking and to give their name each time they speak to assist witnesses and to assist Hansard. Committee members and participants are reminded not to take another call or put their phones on hold during the chorus call as this may cause interference with the teleconference.
I now welcome representatives of the Department of Home Affairs to give evidence. For the Hansard record, would you... Would each of you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear before the committee. Miss Cargill, did you wanna go first?
