Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters Australian Parliament
03:22 - 04:01
Speaker 19
I declare open the public hearing of the joint standing committee on electoral matters for the inquiry into the twenty twenty five federal election. In accordance with the committee's resolution of 08/04/2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of proceedings will be published on the Parliament website as well. I remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of this committee. I now welcome associate professor Paul Williams to give evidence today. For the hand side record, would you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear before the committee?
04:02 - 04:14
Speaker 5
Thank you to the committee. My name is doctor Paul Douglas Williams. I'm an associate professor at Griffith University. Today, I'm speaking on my own behalf and as a political scientist, and my views don't necessarily reflect the university.

Speaker 19
Thank you, associate professor. Although the committee does not require you to give evidence under oath, I should advise you that this hearing is a legal proceeding of the parliament and therefore has the same standing as proceedings of the respective Houses. The giving of false or misleading evidence is a serious matter and may be regarded as contempt of Parliament. The evidence given today will be recorded by Hansard and attracts parliamentary privilege. I now invite you to make a brief opening statement before we proceed to discussion.
04:41 - 04:59
Speaker 5
Okay. Thanks again to the committee for inviting me. I think it's a real honor to be able to participate in these types of proceedings, and it's... I'm a passionate supporter, obviously, of of the parliament and and and the electoral process. So I'm not sure whether if if everyone's got access to the document that I only uploaded this morning.
